The PCR test

The PCR test (polymerase chain reaction test) is a test to show whether you are currently infected with the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). A taken by trained personnel throat and nasal swab forms the basis of the PCR test. The collected material is analyzed in our laboratory. This results in a negative or positive result.

This test is widely used, especially for travel. Most countries currently have entry restrictions as part of the corona measures. A negative PCR test with a medical certificate is then necessary to be allowed to travel into the country and to avoid mandatory quarantine.

What is a PCR test?

The PCR test is a polymeric chain reaction test. The test is used to show whether someone is carrying the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). In the test, a piece of genetic material obtained from a throat and nasal swab is highly multiplied to show whether the virus is present.

How is the test administered?

Our doctor or nurse will take some mucus off with a throat and nasal swab. Our laboratory analyzes your material. The doctor checks the results and creates a certificate that confirms your COVID-19 PCR status.

Why a PCR test?

The PCR test has a high test sensitivity. The test can pick up very small amounts of the virus. Therefore, the PCR test is still the gold standard.

What is the difference with an Antigen Rapid Test?

The PCR test is the gold standard. This is because the PCR test is very sensitive and also detects lower virus values. However, for the PCR test we need our laboratory and the result often takes a little longer.

We do not need a laboratory for a COVID-19 rapid test . We can perform this test in our clinic and the results are available quickly.

Why not a quick test for travel?

Not all countries are de antigen rapid test to travel indoors. Always check this carefully before booking the test. With a PCR test you can travel to all countries that require a test.

Where can you go for a PCR test?

We have various test locations for PCR testing in the Netherlands. You can find an overview of this on our test locations page.

By clicking on a location you will find more information about the relevant clinic. You can easily schedule a test directly via our booking tool .

Information for travelers

Validity

Validity is an important part of PCR testing used for travel. Most countries have a number of hours or days that a certificate is valid. Often there is still a distinction between validity until departure or validity until arrival . Watch this carefully!

Bring or submit a statement

In most cases, you will be asked to take the certificate with you on a trip in order to show it. In some cases this may be digital, but usually this must be a printed version. However, some countries want the certificate to be delivered online earlier. Watch this carefully!

Children

It differs per country whether children should also be tested. In many countries children from 0 years old must be tested, yet there are also countries where children up to a certain age are exempt. So check this carefully before departure.
